Mogwai New Paths to Helicon 1 Live

New Paths to Helicon 1 has always been a favorite song of mine. Call me a fatalist, but back when the airlines would actually let you listen to headphones during takeoff and landing, I’d usually be listening to this song during every takeoff and landing. There’s something immensely beautiful in the buildup and the explosion of the big part of the song. Something about this song always made me feel content with a tragic disaster – should it happen – because I really think there’s a power in certain songs to just totally engulf you in emotion and distraction from life. Fortunately, all three times I’ve seen Mogwai live they’ve played this song.

Transworld Snowboarding In Color Trailer

I’ve not picked this video up yet but plan to at some point. The riding looks good and it seems right on par with the Forum and Absinthe videos I’ve grabbed recently.

2010 Snowboarding Videos from Absinthe, Forum, and Teton Gravity Research

Snowboarding season is just around the corner and I am as happy as I could possibly be about watching summer fade away. Expect to see some frequent posts throughout the winter about various weekend trips I’ll be taking up north to Wisconsin, and hopefully a trip or two out west. Thanks to the awesome group that started up Windy City Ski last season, a few resorts in Wisconsin are just a 3 hour bus ride away, giving me and other Chicago snowboarders a chance to skip driving and get in a few hours sleep on the way up at 6:30 am, ride all day, meet new friends, and get a fun bus ride home when we’re all exhausted. Snowboarding is hands down the best thing I’ve ever gotten to do in my life, so even just a couple trips last season basically made the year for me.

I’m getting pumped to see many of the new videos coming out this season – but I’m really excited about what Forum, Absinthe, and Teton Gravity Research have to offer, the latter of which is about on Jeremy Jones and an incredible trek to hike and ride some previously inaccessible big mountain terrain. Looks like it will be showing in various cities, but not Chicago. I’m sure it will be on DVD soon enough. Absinthe’s NowHere looks good and I really loved last year’s video Neverwhere. Forum’s F It also looks promising in true Forum fashion.  Just don’t get the song stuck in your head like I did!

The Cribs – We Were Aborted on Later with Jools Holland

I’d been meaning to get around to grabbing Ignore the Ignorant, the new album from The Cribs, and picked it up over the weekend. Didn’t get to see them at Lollapalooza but did rub elbows with Johnny Marr in our hotel elevator. I really wish I’d gotten to see them because this albums is just excellent. We Were Aborted might is just a great song that I could listen to over and over. Johnny Marr brings is a great addition to the band (as if the guy would somehow not be an awesome addition to ANY band) Here’s that song, as well as We Share The Same Skies from Late Night With David Letterman.

Interpol – Lights Video

I’ve been a bit behind on Interpol lately but just found the video for Lights from their forthcoming self titled album due out on September 11. As everyone has been saying, this album is expected to be a return to much of the sounds and atmosphere of Turn On The Bright Lights. The video for Lights and the song itself are hopefully a good clue into what will likely be one of the best albums of the year.

Jarratt Moody – The Commonwealth

I regularly pick up each issue of IDN but rarely dig into the DVD that’s included. The new issue, The Colour Issue, has quite a few great videos, but this one really caught my eye and led me to the work of Jarratt Moody. He’s got some very impressive video work on his site for Pepsi, Animal Planet, CNN and other clients. I really like the Wilson commercial (might just be a spec project but it’s impressive nonetheless) not only because of the visuals, but because my favorite Sigur Ros song is used for the music.

Great Intro Sequence for Fox’s Human Target

I caught the pilot episode for Fox’s new show, Human Target, last night and thought the intro sequence was really great. The music leaves a little to be desired, but visually it’s a stylish mix of what looks like digital water color and ink blot tests. Great collage feel overall; it might be one of the better intros for an action show in quite a while.

New Swiss Bank Notes Competition Results

I found this over at QBN yesterday.  Apparently it was a competition to design new bank notes, as described on the Swiss National Bank web site:

As part of the planning process for the development of a new banknote series, a competition for the artistic design of the new banknote series was launched at the beginning of 2005. Twelve artists were invited to present their designs for all six denominations on the theme “Switzerland open to the world”. The jury met in November 2005 to evaluate the submissions and to decide on the winning designs. These were presented at a news conference in Berne on 23 November 2005. You can view them by clicking on the names of the individual designers.

Here are a few examples of the winning entries:

Some of then are very strange, such as this entry that looks like it was made with Microsoft Paint.

All results can be found here.

White Lies are really one of my favorites out there right now. Infectiously good, great rhythms, great songs. Their set in the rain at Lollapalooza 2009 on Friday was one of my best moments of the festival.
